Following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved contracts totaling $2.99 billion for three major urban rail projects.
*The approved projects are:*
*Lagos Green Line Rail Project (Phase 1A):* A segment of the planned 68km network designed to connect Marina to the Lekki Free Zone.
*Kano Metro City Rail Project:* An initiative aimed at overhauling urban transportation and reducing traffic congestion within the Kano metropolis.
*Kaduna State Light Rail Project:* A project intended to improve passenger and freight movement in Kaduna, a strategic economic hub in northern Nigeria.
*Key Project Details*
Financing: These initiatives will be financed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) on behalf of the Federal Government, with provisions for counterpart funding from other sources.
*Economic Strategy:* The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, stated that these approvals focus on critical cities where targeted infrastructure investment is expected to yield high economic returns.
*Timeline:* The projects are linked to the federal government's capital expenditure plans for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years.
