Challenges of Real-time Transmission: The Justification for the Proviso Backup in Electoral Law 2026 - Kudos to Legislatures for the Foresight

Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), made the assertions in the news.

He cited challenges with real-time result transmission in the FCT polls, specifically in Kabi ward of Kuje Area Council, where results weren't transmitted until the following day due to poor network connectivity and rough terrain.

The recent FCT polls have exposed the practical limits of real-time result transmission, with INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, citing network challenges as a major obstacle.

According to Olumekun, areas with poor network connectivity, such as Abuja's rural districts, made it difficult to upload results in real-time.

*Challenges with Real-Time Transmission:*

- Poor network connectivity in rural areas

- Inadequate infrastructure

- Technical glitches

*Reasons for the New Electoral Law 2026:*

The new law insists on provisional backup where network fails to upload Form EC8A to:

- Ensure transparency and accuracy in result transmission

- Prevent electoral disputes and malpractices

- Enhance credibility of the electoral process

*Townhall Meeting Attendees:*

- Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner

- Prof. Amupitan, FCT Electoral Stakeholders

- Other electoral stakeholders including: featured guests including Oby Ezekwesili, Sen. Ireti Kingibe, APC chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, and LP’s Nenadi Usman, focusing on the recent Electoral Act amendments and how to improve the credibility and transparency of future elections.

*Recommendations:*

- Improve network infrastructure in rural areas

- Invest in backup systems for result transmission

- Enhance voter education and awareness

*Conclusion:*

The FCT polls have highlighted the need for robust electoral systems and infrastructure.

The new electoral law 2026 is a step in the right direction, ensuring transparency and accuracy in result transmission.

INEC must continue to engage stakeholders and address technical challenges to enhance the credibility of future elections.
