Senate moves to establish LG electoral commission.

The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards establishing the National Independent Local Government Electoral Commission (NILGEC)¹.

This new body will be responsible for conducting elections for the 774 local governments across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)¹.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Sani Musa, has passed its first reading¹.

NILGEC will operate independently, free from external influence, and will have its budget approved by the National Assembly to ensure financial independence¹.

The commission will consist of a Chairperson and six commissioners, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, each serving a five-year term, renewable once¹.

This move follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that barred state governors from retaining or utilizing funds meant for local governments¹.
