The number of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) conversion centres in Nigeria:
- has increased to 170,
- would likely increase to 200 before the end of 2024 - in two weeks.
- A target of 500 has been set for the year 2025
A car conversion can be completed within one hour.
A converted CNG car, becomes a hybrid with option to switch from petrol to gas as required.
CNG tanks presently install in the vehicles are durable for 20 years.
The centres are spread across the country.
All the conversion centres are owned by private-sector investors.
The CNG conversion programme aims to:
- reduce Nigeria's dependence on petrol and diesel,
- provides cheaper fuel alternative
- reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has been instrumental in promoting the CNG programme, with plans to establish more conversion centres nationwide.
