Despite past regimes spending billions of dollars, the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refinery remained an elusive goal.
Former President Obasanjo had even declared it an impossible task. However, the current administration has proven skeptics wrong.
Naysayers and Critics
Unfortunately, some individuals and groups, driven by their own agendas, have continued to doubt the project's success.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Pengassan, which confirmed the refinery's operation, have faced abuse and insults from certain quarters.
Achievement Commended by Ex-GMDs
In December 2024, a group of former Group Managing Directors (GMDs) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) visited and inspected the Port Harcourt refinery.
They commended the current management team, led by Mele Kyari, for their efforts.
The former GMDs, including Chamberlain Oyibo, Funsho Kupolokun, and Andrew Yakubu, praised the project's success.
Clarifying the Magnitude of the Project
Jackson Gaius-Obaseki, who served as GMD from 1999 to 2003, explained that many critics fail to understand the project's scope.
He emphasized that the rehabilitation was not a routine maintenance exercise but a comprehensive overhaul that transformed a 1965 facility into a state-of-the-art plant by 2024
Conclusion
The rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refinery is a remarkable achievement that showcases the power of visionary leadership and determination.
By overcoming the challenges that had hindered previous attempts, both the FPMB and the current administration has set a new standard for project execution and delivery in Nigeria.
This achievement is a beacon of hope for the country's economic growth and development.
God bless Nigeria!
