Background Information
"Just like The Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) that took 20 years to pass, which is absolute nonsense! I don’t have 20 years to spare on this tax reform bill and its implementation!" - PBAT
Historical Reviews
Some oppositions are known to run with propaganda that it's not good for everybody - 20 years to delay a good bill is not good for anybody including those who use their political strengths to block progress.
Anybody that is against the proposed tax reform wants NIGERIA to remain the same either for selfish gain or is just plain ignorant following the crowd with Zero Understanding!
Even though the proposed tax bill if approved would reduce revenue for both Lagos and Rivers states, yet they both cooperate for national interest.
Had it been Lagos and Rivers were the first to shout that they don't want the bill, by now everyone against the bill will be the ones championing it.
Strategy of the Opposition
Following legislative procedures makes the system work.
In-built inside Bill processing procedure is " public hearing". Public Hearing is at stage 3.
The opposition doesn't want the system to work, therefore tried every possible means to prevent the bill from passing through legislative procedures.
The public hearing that the opposition are clamouring is at the third stage of legislative procedures. And taking the bill to public hearing, first before getting to the floor of NASS is a way to kill the bill before getting to the floor of NASS.
Those insisting public hearing as the first step know what they are doing - killing the bill without hearing on the legislative chambers.
That's the same strategy used to delay PIB for 20 years. Today again, they are trying to repeat the same strategy for the Tax Reforms Bills.
PBAT really understands what it takes for a SYSTEM to Work, and also knows the legislative procedures.
That's why he insisted that the bill follows the due process, which also contains: public hearing the opposition are clamoring for.
